
MOTS-c is a 16–amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the 12S rRNA region of the mitochondrial genome. It belongs to a class of short open-reading-frame–encoded peptides originating from mitochondrial DNA, and is supplied as a lyophilized powder for in-vitro research into mitochondrial signaling, AMPK-pathway biology, and cellular metabolic regulation.
First characterized by Lee et al. (2015) as a mitochondrial-derived peptide that translocates to the nucleus under metabolic-stress conditions to regulate AMPK-dependent gene expression.
